COMMUNITY BLOCKS

Phoenix, AZ

SUSTAINABLE CITY

Project Presentation 1.25.2017_Page_20.png

With overambitious, High rise zoning along the Phoenix central avenue corridor during the 1970’s, there have been unrealistic expectations of land values for owners leading to a large amount of these lots being land banked and left vacant, greatly hindering the possibility of Phoenix having a viable, pedestrian oriented city. This project explores an alternative land use strategy.

This work introduces a cost effective, climate responsive architecture that could be deployed quickly to support a mix of housing, commerce, retail, and public amenities in an attempt to infill vacant lots with healthy mixed-use environments. It could be installed permanently or temporarily to create a community block that connects low density neighborhoods to a higher density urban environment, catalyzing future development of its surroundings into a vibrant and walk-able district.

“Every few hundred years in Western history there occurs a sharp transformation... Within a few short decades, society rearranges itself - its worldview, its basic values, its social and political structures, its arts, its key institutions. We are currently living through just such a transformation.” ― Peter Drucker
